A Second Chance: How 35 Lanai Lions Found New Homes on the Mainland
In April 2024, a major milestone took flight from the tiny island of Lānaʻi. With support from Greater Good Charities, Kamaka Air, and the Maui and Silicon Valley Humane Societies, 35 of our adoptable cats boarded a plane and began a journey toward loving forever homes.
This transfer was more than just a logistical feat. It marked a critical step in our long-term plan to balance the sanctuary population and continue saving lives. After taking in 220 unsocialized cats after the Lahaina fires, our population surged past 880, putting pressure on food, medical care, and staff resources. By transferring socialized cats to partner organizations, we not only give those cats a second chance — we free up space for others still waiting for rescue.
And the impact has been incredible. These 35 cats now have the chance to be adopted by families on the mainland, while we continue to make room for the wild-at-heart felines who need more time to adjust. This is the essence of our mission: giving every cat the best possible life, whether that means a peaceful life at the sanctuary or a warm lap to curl up in miles away.
